sobre la entrevista.
Las
preguntas fueron redactadas por Dafne Fierro y Le Diabolik
y fueron enviadas a la banda via e-mail. Fabrizio, baterista
de la banda, fue el encargado de responder todas y cada
una de las preguntas. Muchísimas gracias Fabrizio, y gracias
a Mike, webmaster de la página oficial de Macbeth, por
ponernos en contacto con la banda y hacer posible nuestra
primera entrevista con uno de los genios creativos mas
grandes de todo el ámbito musical.
MM
es la abreviatura de Miss Murderess, la cual hemos usado
para diferenciar entre las preguntas hechas por nosotros
y las respuestas de Fabrizio.
La

MM: Primero
que nada queremos agradecerles por esta entrevista, es
un placer entrevista a una banda tan grande como ustedes.
Macbeth: ¡Gracias!
MM: Empecemos, pasó un largo tiempo
entre Vanitas y Malae Artes. ¿Qué estuvieron
haciendo durante todo ese tiempo?
Fabrizio: después de grabar nuestro segundo álbum, el guitarrista
principal decidió en una semana abandonar la banda.
Él era conmigo uno de los principales compositores…
¿Cómo puedes imaginarte algo semejante? Él estuvo en la banda desde 1997.
Empezamos a buscar un nuevo guitarrista y después de tratar con un par de malos
músicos, recordé a mi viejo amigo Max. Había tocado con él muchos años atrás…
Así que después de un buen “supper” y muchas cervezas para hablar
acerca de mi proyecto, le dije “Te necesitamos” y él respondió “Ok,
lo pensaré” y yo respondí “Despreocúpate ¡necesito una respuesta
ahora!”. Después de 2 meses Max estuvo tocando en el escenario con MACBETH.
Así que finalmente empezamos a trabajar en material nuevo.
Perdimos el tiempo y esperar es casi siempre doloroso, pero creo que el nuevo álbum
es una compensación para todos los dolores!!!
MM: Platícame acerca del nuevo álbum Malae Artes, ¿Cuál es el significado
del nombre y por que decidieron llamarlo así?
Fabrizio: El significado del título del álbum (“Malae Artes” del
antiguo latín, suena como “artes del infierno” en español) se explica
canción por canción, en las letras de cada canción. El tema principal de mis
nuevas letras es “mentir”, todas las canciones tratan sobre mentiras,
engaño, gente con dos caras…
Nuda Veritas (la intro) es un preludio a muchas reflexiones que vienen en camino.
Pero cuidado, no esperen un álbum negativo por que nuestras letras les enseñarán
a abrir los ojos para buscar la otra cara de todo. Somos gente muy positiva
a pesar de que nos gustan aspectos de melancolía en nuestras canciones.
Respecto a nuestro nuevo sonido puedo decir que nuestro elemento sinfónico
sigue presente aunque adornado por guitarras agresivas y muy buenas melodías
y voces. Me gusta el nuevo sonido por que es fresco y también poderoso.
Piensa en el Yin-Yang chino, las formas blanca y negra en un círculo que representan
la interacción de dos energías. Nuestra música es melódica y poderosa al mismo
tiempo. Dos opuestos en uno…
La música es adictiva y directa, las letras son fáciles de entender así que
la música le queda como guante a las letras.
MM: No hay voces guturales en este disco, o al menos no tantas como
habían en Romantic Tragedy’s Crescendo y Vanitas, ¿Por qué decidieron
no utilizarlas esta vez?
Fabrizio: creo que mi hermano, Andreas, es un muy buen cantante.
Cantar solo de esa manera es un tipo de limitación.
MM: ¿Cuál fue la fuente de inspiración para este álbum?
Fabrizio: las experiencias de la vida son la más grande influencia.
Puedo decir que el tema principal del álbum es la verdad. Pero podemos inspirarnos
en cualquier cosa, en películas, bandas sonoras, libros, básicamente en reflexiones
sobre nuestras vidas.
MM: Vinieron a México este año, cuéntame sobre esta experiencia.
Fabrizio: ¡Fue una experiencia maravillosa!
Los fans mexicanos son en verdad alocados ;-)
La gente fue increíble, se sabían todas las letras, lo cual sorprendió inclusive
a la banda. Recuerdo a nuestros fans brincando y cantando nuestras canciones… ¡Fue
increíble!
La gira estuvo muy bien planeada y nuestro equipo fue también genial, así que
debo decir que ¡esperamos regresar el próximo año!
MM: ¿Qué es lo que más les gustó de México?
Fabrizio: nuestros fans, la comida y la “michelada” ;-).
MM: No sé si sabes pero esta entrevista aparecerá en nuestro
fansite llamado Miss Murderess. Decidimos llamarlo así debido a que le tenemos
un afecto especial a esa canción, personalmente adoro la letra, las cuales
me suenan como la historia de Elizabeth Bathory, ¿es en verdad Miss Murderess
acerca de Elizabeth Bathory?
Fabrizio: Si, lo sé y quiero agradecerles muchísimo por su
sorprendente trabajo ;-)
Bueno, Miss Murderess es una fascinante doncella oscura que asesina a todos
sus amantes. Cuando escribía las letras no estaba pensando en Bathory.
MM: Ahora, hablando de canciones favoritas, ¿Cuál es tu canción
favorita del disco?
Fabrizio: Hey, es muy difícil… no sé. Me gustan todas
las nuevas canciones por que cada canción tiene un significado para mí.
MM: ¿Cuál es el proceso que siguen cuando escriben una canción? ¿Qué escriben
primero, la letra o la música?
Fabrizio: Alguien llega con un riff y Max y yo trabajamos en
eso. Después practicamos todo eso en conjunto hasta que sentimos que está sonando
bien y pronto después de eso, escribo la letra de la música que ya tenemos
hecha.
A veces estamos inspirados y tenemos una canción en 5 minutos, a veces nos
toma meses completar una canción.
MM: Vi que morena escribió una canción para este álbum, ¿seguirá ella
escribiendo? ¡Es realmente buena en esto!
Fabrizio: Si, es una buena canción. Si, quizá Morena escribirá letras
nuevas.
MM: ¿Qué artistas y bandas han tenido influencia en la forma en que
escriben sus canciones?
Fabrizio: Siento que un músico debe oír toda clase de buena
música, así que no hay una sola banda o unas cuentas nada más en nuestro
respaldo.
Me gustan mucho: Slayer, Muse, Porcupine Tree, Enya, Placebo, Hocico, Death,
Sopor Aeternus y muchos más… Nuestro sonido proviene de muchísimos lados
(demasiadas bandas para ser mencionadas) por que nuestras raíces son muy diferentes,
pero si las combinas el resultado es MACBETH.
MM: ¿Con quien/es te gustaría hacer un dueto?
Fabrizio: Lacuna Coil, In flames, Moonspell…
MM: Estamos ansiosos de ver un video de alguna canción de Malae
Artes, ¿tienen planes de filmar uno?
Fabrizio: no sé si haremos un video de alguna canción de Malae
Artes, pero estoy seguro que haremos uno para el siguiente álbum.
MM: ¿Qué piensan de la forma en que la gente ha aceptado Malae
Artes?
Fabrizio: A nuestros fans les gusta el nuevo álbum. Especialmente
en tu país, a la gente le gustó las canciones que tocamos en el escenario.
MM: Ya que ustedes son quienes diseñan el arte del disco, ¿Por
qué escogieron el diseño de Malae Artes? ¿Qué es lo que esperaban captar
de la audiencia con dicho diseño?
Fabrizio: creo que el diseño y el arte de un álbum son muy
importantes para entender el trabajo artístico…
Compuse este paquete para explicar que significa “Malae Artes” para
mí. Si miras las fotos y los dibujos del booklet quizá encuentres significados
nuevos…
MM: Sé que es muy pronto para preguntar pero ¿actualmente tienen
planes para lanzar un nuevo álbum?
Fabrizio: Si, entraremos al estudio el próximo año, quizá en
el otoño.
No queremos esperar demasiado para lanzar un nuevo álbum ;-)
MM: ¿Y algún plan de lanzar un DVD?
Fabrizio: Tengo que preguntarle a nuestra disquera, por que estuve
hablando con los demás acerca de eso la semana pasada… Sería genial ;-)
MM: ¿Cuál ha sido la mejor experiencia que han tenido como banda?
Fabrizio: Las giras y shows son siempre experiencias increíbles.
Amo conocer a nuestros fans, verlos venir a nuestros shows, verlos cantar mis
letras y amo cuando “sacuden la cabeza”
MM: ¿Cómo fue su primer concierto?
Fabrizio: Fue hace mucho tiempo… en fin… Unas cuantas
personas, mal sonido, club pequeño. Pero recuerdo que estábamos satisfechos
y ¡realmente felices!
MM: ¿Cómo se preparan antes de subir al escenario?
Fabrizio: bebiendo algo y platicando hasta que nuestro maganer
dice “ok chicos, 15 minutos”. Después nos vestimos.
MM: ¿Qué concierto sienten que ha sido el mejor de sus vidas?
Fabrizio: creo que el del verano pasado en Guadalajara o en
la ciudad de México… pero también recuerdo un show en Italia, fue el
año pasado en Milán.
MM: ¿Qué estarías haciendo si no estuvieras en la banda?
Fabrizio: soy arquitecto y también diseñador gráfico, así que…
MM: ¿Cómo te adentraste en la música gótica?
Fabrizio: Escuchando toda clase de metal…
Me gustan el black metal, gothic metal, trash metal y también el pop.
MM: ¿Qué piensas del éxito que están teniendo bandas góticas
actualmente? Ejemplos: Nightwish, Within Temptation, Leaves’ Eyes, Xandria,
H.I.M., etc
Fabrizio: Me gustan algunas de esas bandas, creo que este tipo
de música tendrá una enorme audiencia pronto… Creo que esto es positivo
;-).
MM: ¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre el futuro de la música gótica
y como crees que este género ha cambiado con el paso de los años?
Fabrizio: No sé… supongo que por supuesto, habrá una
evolución.
El gothic metal es ahora muy diferente si lo comparas con el sonido de la primera
banda de gothic metal.
MM: Muchísimas gracias Fabrizio por tu tiempo, ¿hay algo más
que quisieras decirle a quienes lean esta entrevista?
Fabrizio: muchísimas gracias por esta genial entrevista. Gracias
a todos nuestros fans ;-) Nada somos sin ustedes…

MM: First
of all guys, I want to thank you for this interview, it’s
a pleasure to interview such a great band as you are.
Macbeth: Thank you very
much!
MM: Let’s start,
it was a long time between Vanitas and
Malae Artes, what were you doing at that
time?
Fabrizio: After recording our second album, the lead guitarist
decided in a week to give up the band.
He was with me one of the main composer…
How can you imagine such a thing? He was in the band since 1997.
We began to look for a guitarist and after trying a couple of bad musicians,
I remembered my old friend Max. I was playing with him many years ago…
So after a good supper and many beers to talk about my project, I said him: ”We
need you” and he replied: “Ok, I’ll think it over” so
I said “Don’t worry I need an answer now!”. After 2 months
Max was on stage with MACBETH.
So, finally we started to work on new stuff…
We wasted time and waiting is often painful, but I think the new album is a
reward to all pains!!!
MM: Tell me a little about the new album Malae Artes, what’s
the meaning of the name and why did you decide to give the record that name?
Fabrizio: Malae Artes it' s always in MACBETH style but is
a step ahead into something more mature.
The meaning of the album (“Malae Artes” from ancient latin, sounds
like “arts of hell” in english) title is explained track by track,
in the lyrics of each song.
The main theme of my new lyrics is “to lie”, all songs deal with
lies, deceit, double faced people…
“Nuda Veritas” (the intro) is a prelude to many reflections upon
appearance.
But be careful! Do not expect a negative album because our lyrics will teach
you to open your eyes to search the other face of everything. We are really
positive people despite the fact that we like aspects of melancholy in our
songs.
About our new sound I can say that our symphonic element is still present although
enhanced by aggressive guitars and very good voices melody. I like the new
sound because is fresh and powerful too.
Think to the chinese Yin-yang, the black and white shapes in a circle that
represent interaction of the two energies. Our sound is melodic and powerful
at the same time. Two opposites in one…
The music is catchy and direct, lyrics are easy to understand so music is hand
in glove with lyrics.
MM: There are no guttural voices in this record, at least not
as much as there were on Romantic Tragedy’s Crescendo and Vanitas,
why did you decide not to use them now?
Fabrizio: I guess my brother, Andreas, is a very good singer.
To sing in that way only is a kind of limitation…
MM: What was the source of inspiration for this album?
Fabrizio: Life experience is the biggest influence. I can
say the main subject of the album is the truth. But we can be inspired
by everything, by movies, soundtracks, books, basically by reflections
of our life.
MM: You toured to Mexico this year, tell me about this experience
Fabrizio: It was a wonderful experience!
Mexican fans are really crazy ;-)
The crowd was amazing, they knew all the lyrics, which suprised even the band.
I remember our fans jumpin, and singing our songs...it was amazing!
The tour was very well planned and our crew was great too, so a I must say
that we hope to come back next year!
MM: What’s what you liked the most about Mexico?
Fabrizio: Our fans, food and michelada ;-)
MM: Don’t know if you know, but this interview is going
to be on our fansite Miss Murderess, we decided to call the site that way
because we have a special love for that song, personally I adore the lyrics,
which to me sounds kind of like Elizabeth Bathory’ story, is actually “Miss
Murderess” about Elizabeth Bathory?
Fabrizio: Yes, I know and I would like to thank you very
much for your amazing work ;-)
Well, Miss Murderess is a fascinating dark lady who kills all her lover.
When I was writing lyrics I was not thinking to Bathory..
MM: Now, talking about favorite songs, What’s your favorite
song from this record?
Fabrizio: Hey, It’s too hard…I don’t know.
I like all the new songs because each song has a meaning to me.
MM: What’s the process you follow when you write a
song? What do you write first, the music or the lyrics?
Fabrizio: Somebody come up with a riff and I work on it with
Max. Then we practice that all together until we feel it's sounding pretty
tight and soon after I write lyrics to the music we just made.
Sometimes we’re inspired and we’ll have a whole song in five minutes,
sometimes it could take months to complete a song…
MM: I saw Morena wrote a song for this album, will she keep
on doing it? She’s very good at that!
Fabrizio: Yes, is a good song. Yes, maybe Morena will write
new lyrics…
MM: Which artists and bands have had influence in the way
you write your songs?
Fabrizio: I guess a musician must listen to all kinds of
good music.
So, there’s not only one band or few bands in our background.
I like very much: Slayer, Muse, Porcupine Tree, Enya, Placebo, Hocico, Death,
Sopor Aeternus and many more… Our sound comes from a ton of stuff, (too
many bands to be mentioned) because our roots are very different, but if you
add them the result is MACBETH.
MM: Who would you like to do a duet with?
Fabrizio: Lacuna Coil, In flames, Moonspell…
MM: We are anxious to see a video for a Malae Artes’ song,
do you have any plans about making one?
Fabrizio: I don’t know if we’ll shoot a video
for a song of Malae Artes…but I’m sure we’ll do it for
the next one.
MM: What do you think of the way people accepted Malae Artes?
Fabrizio: Our fans like the new album. Expecially in your
country, people liked the new songs we played on the stage.
MM: Since you’re the ones who design the CD art, why
did you choose Malae Artes design? What did you want to get from the audience
with it?
Fabrizio: I guess artwork & layout of an album are very important
to understand the work of art…
I compose this packaging to explain what “Malae Artes” means to
me. If you see pictures and drawings in the booklet maybe you’ll find
new meanings…
MM: I know it’s too soon to ask you this but, do you
already have any plans for a new record?
Fabrizio: Yes, we’ll enter the studio next year, maybe
in autumn.
We don’t want to wait too much to release a new album ;-)
MM: And plans for a DVD release?
Fabrizio: I have to ask our label, because I was talking about
with the other guys just last week… It would be great ;-)
MM: What’s the best experience you’ve had as a
band?
Fabrizio: Tours and shows are always amazing experiences.
I love to know our fans, to see them coming to our shows, to see them singing
my lyrics and I love when they do headbanging!!!
MM: How was your first concert like?
Fabrizio: It was long ago…anyhow…
Few people, bad sound, small club.
But I remember we were satisfied and really happy!
MM: How do you prepare yourselves before getting on stage?
Fabrizio: Drinking something and chattering ‘till when
our stage manager says “ok guys, 15 minutes”. Then we dress our
MM: What concert you feel it’s been the best of your
lives?
Fabrizio: I guess last summer in Guadalajara or in Mexico
city…but I remember a show in Italy too, it was last year in Milan.
MM: What would you be doing if you were not in the band?
Fabrizio: I’m an architect and a graphic designer too,
so…
MM: How did you get into gothic music?
Fabrizio: Listening to all kind of metal…
I like black metal, gothic metal, thrash metal and pop too.
MM: What do you think of the success that some gothic bands already
have? Examples: Nightwish, Within Temptation, Leaves’ Eyes, Xandria,
H.I.M., etc.
Fabrizio: I like few of those bands, I believe that this kind
of music will have a huge audience soon… I think this is positive ;-)
MM: What’s your opinion about the future of gothic
music and how do you think this genre has changed with the pass of the
years?
Fabrizio: I don’t know…I guess there will be
an evolution, of course.
Gothic metal is now very different if compared to the sound of the first gothic
metal band…
